Surfing in Pembrokeshire

The surfing beaches of South Pembrokeshire

Manorbier B and B provides an ideal base to explore the main surfing beaches in both South and North Pembrokeshire.

Freshwater West

Freshwater West is the most consistent spot in Pembrokeshire and normally hosts The All Wales Surfing Championships each year. Outer Reef Surf School use this beach and Manorbier to teach surfing from beginners to advanced surfers. It is also lifeguarded as there is a strong undertow. There are left and right handers here most of the time and it is popular with body boarders, kite and wind surfers. There is plenty of space for everyone to enjoy this stunning long beach where huge sand dunes form a dramatic backdrop to the beach.

A good right hander that picks up and peels over the rocks and finishes over the sandy beach. Works best just after high tide but will work all the time if the conditions are good. NE to SE winds work best. Best left to experienced surfers because of the rocks, but beginners can surf in the sandy area and Outer Reef Surf School use it for surf lessons with Freshwater West. It is also great for body boarding. Manorbier beach can have a strong undertow and it is not lifeguarded. It can be busy with regular Pembrokeshire Surfers!

Newgale is a good fun surfing beach ideal for beginners, gear is available for hire making it quite a popular spot in the summer. Newgale has been known to offer up a few hefty 5ft waves. A good spot for longboarders. This beach can be prone to the odd rip, but only across the beach. E to NE are offshore. It is also popular with kite surfers, sea kayakers, and windsurfers. There is a surf school based here.

Whitesands is a lovely sandy beach, just the other side of St.Davids. Best after high tide but a few hours before low there can be a nice right hander. Best in NE to SE winds.
